The alcohol aeolipyle is the oldest device for producing a flame
by means of a violent jet of air. It was used, even in physics laboratories,
for bending and blowing glass.
The one shown here is all brass (height 27 cm) and is composed of an alcohol
burner placed at the end of a column on a square base (9.2 x 9.2 cm) weighted
with a lead plate for stability. Above the burner we find a spherical tank
(diameter 7.5 cm) for alcohol suspended from a curved tube screwed to the
top of the sphere and regulated in such a way that the free end, which is
tapered, is above the flame.
