In this microscope, which is entirely brass-plated brass, the tube (length
19 cm) and the slide holder are attached to an L-shaped plate which is
hinged to the end of a column 19 cm high. This is fixed, by means of a
plate of elaborate shape, on a square wooden box (14 x 14 cm, height 5
cm) painted black with a drawer for accessories.
The slide holder consists of two thin plates with a hole at the centre,
between which the glass slide is placed and held tight by a helicoidal
spring that presses the lower one upwards.
If the object is transparent, it is illuminated from below by means of
a concave mirror; if it is opaque it is illuminated from above by means
of a convergent lens.
The mirror and the lens, since they are free to rotate around a vertical
axis, can assume any orientation and, being free to rotate around the
horizontal axis passing through the suspending pins, they can assume any
inclination. ...continues
