ANTONIO PACINOTTI IN CAGLIARI

After the year spent in Pisa, Antonio Pacinotti returned to Cagliari and, on 16 November 1875, he delivered the inaugural address for scholastic year 1875-76 on an "Outline of the history of engines" which is of considerable interest for certain ideas, still up-to-date, in the field of energy sources and the environment. With the extraordinary grant, he purchased teaching equipment and utensils for the workshop, among which a small lathe and a large one of cast iron and iron which cost 500 lire; thus he could go on with the construction of his machines and complete the one with the electromagnetic coil he had begun in Bologna. As we shall see later on, he also built the ones that were exhibited at national and international expositions.
With the passing of the years, Antonio Pacinotti became so well adapted to his exile, as he had defined his permanence in Cagliari in the previously mentioned letter to Rector Patrizio Gennari, that he hesitated at length when in 1881 he was offered the possibility of returning to Pisa to succeed his father in the Chair of Technological Physics; on the contrary, from rough drafts of official letters concerning his transfer to Pisa (all conserved in the archives) it can be seen that it was his father who insisted on the transfer against the wishes of Pacinotti himself. In leading Pacinotti to such a state of mind, surely the fact that he could then avail himself of a satisfactorily equipped workshop in Cagliari as well as having met the nineteen-year-old Maria Grazia Sequi-Salazar, whom he married in Cagliari on 29 April 1882, and unfortunately whom he lost in Pisa on 25 February of the following year.
