It is protected by a lid painted black which can be raised for replacement of the electrodes and on the sides it has two round glass windows to check the position of the electrodes.
In the front cylindrical part of the lid there is a horizontal rod which can move by means of a rack screw. At the end of this is a collimating convergent lens.
